Overview

Explore Samarkand with this self-guided audio walking tour that helps you move through the city at your own pace, uncovering its history and culture while feeling the heartbeat of a legendary Silk Road hub. You'll gain context for every landmark and street, so you can fully appreciate the city without getting lost or overwhelmed. I'm Shodiyor, your guide for this journey. As someone who has walked these streets countless times and studied the stories behind each monument, I focus on clarity and context, pointing out details most visitors miss and connecting historical events to the rhythms of daily life here. My goal is to make the city approachable and engaging, letting you explore with confidence and curiosity. The tour begins at the Gur-i Amir Mausoleum, where you’ll see Timur’s final resting place and learn how this striking complex grew from a memorial for his grandson into the imperial family crypt. From there, you’ll walk to Registan Square, the heart of Samarkand, framed by the Ulugh Beg, Sherdor, and Tillakori madrasahs, and hear how the city’s culture, education, and architecture reached their peak here. Next, you’ll visit the Bibi-Khanym Mosque and nearby Siyob Bazaar, where local food, markets, and Samarkand’s famous bread give a taste of daily life and tradition. The route concludes at the Hazrat Khizr Mosque and the extraordinary Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, a series of mausoleums that span centuries of history and faith. The audio is designed to accompany your steps, providing context, historical background, and stories that bring each place to life. You can pause, explore, and resume at your own pace, hearing not only about monumental events but also the daily life, rituals, and small details that make Samarkand unique. Landmarks you’ll encounter include: • Gur-i Amir Mausoleum, Timur’s family crypt • Traditional Uzbek culinary stops for pilaf and bread • Timur’s historic gardens • Registan Square with Ulugh Beg, Sherdor, and Tillakori madrasahs • Bibi-Khanym Mosque and Siyob Bazaar • Hazrat Khizr Mosque • Shah-i-Zinda necropolis with its avenue of mausoleums The route is easy to follow, fully walkable, and flexible, letting you linger where you like or move quickly if you prefer. The audio creates a conversational, immersive experience rather than a rigid lecture, making it ideal for travelers who want insight without pressure, and for anyone wishing to avoid the confusion of self-navigation or missing out on the significance of what they see. This tour is ideal for anyone wanting a thorough, flexible experience without feeling rushed or lost. 👉 Important ticket tips: Some attractions, like the Gur-i Amir Mausoleum, Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, may require a small entrance fee or ticket purchase on-site. Visiting earlier in the day is recommended to avoid crowds, while outdoor areas such as gardens can be enjoyed freely.

Registan Square completely blew me away, photos don't do it justice. The audio added so much context about the three madrasahs that I would have missed just wandering around.

Interesting tour with a lot of history. Some of the audio segments were pretty long so we skipped ahead a couple of times but overall a good way to see the main sites for under five bucks.

Did this on a solo trip and it was exactly what I needed. Shodiyor's voice is really pleasant and the pace felt right for exploring on my own.

The Gur-i Amir Mausoleum was my favorite part. The story about the jade tombstone being stolen and returned because of earthquakes is wild.

Good overview of Samarkand's big sights. We spent about three hours because we lingered at Shah-i-Zinda but the audio itself is around two hours. The bazaar stop felt a bit thin compared to the rest.
