Overview

Hello, and thank you for your interest in this tour! My name is Hiroyuki, and I work as a tour guide in Wakayama. I usually ride my motorcycle up the winding mountain roads to Koyasan, but the view from the cable car is also really beautiful, so please be sure to enjoy it. Koyasan is a rare religious city in Japan. It was established 1,200 years ago by Kōbō Daishi Kūkai as a place of esoteric Buddhist training, and even today, around 30% of its population of 2,500 are monks. Explore the sacred heights of Koyasan, the religious town set over 900 meters above sea level, nestled among a ring of quiet, forested mountains. This self-guided tour allows you to wander at your own pace, discovering major spiritual spots such as ancient temples, atmospheric stone paths, and centuries-old cedar forests. As mist drifts between the peaks, the town reveals its mysterious character, a place where monks chant before dawn and lanterns glow softly at night. Whether you walk the historic pathways or take time to reflect in temple gardens, Koyasan offers a serene, otherworldly experience like no other. I will guide you through the imposing Daimon Gate, the traditional entrance to Koyasan; the Danjō Garan, the sacred temple complex in the western area first developed by Kōbō Daishi and its remarkable buildings; Kongōbu-ji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism with over 12,000 affiliated temples; and finally, Okunoin, where more than 200,000 memorial stupa stand and where Kōbō Daishi is believed to still remain in meditation for the sake of all beings. Since the distance from Kongōbu-ji to Okunoin is about 2 kilometers, I recommend taking the local bus. Enjoy the freedom to explore, pause, and truly feel the spiritual essence of this mountain sanctuary.

Loved the self guided flow through Koyasan. The pace was perfect and I paused often to soak in the misty views at Okunoin.

The app guided me with clear maps and gentle timing tips. The cable car at sunset was stunning and the atmosphere felt sacred.

To be fair the wind on the hill was strong but the pace let me explore two temples and still catch the local bus.

Honestly the self guided route felt sacred. The cedar forest and stone paths were atmospheric and I lingered at the temples.

I started early and the mist gave everything a mystical glow. The app suggested a calm loop from Daimon Gate to Okunoin and I loved it.
