Overview

New York sounds loud, sharp and constant. But what if you could filter out that sound layer by layer and travel 400 years back in time? I'm Elke, city guide and audio journalist in New York. In this walking tour I take you on a journey of 400 years, from New Amsterdam to New York, through streets that are still there today, with stories that most people never hear. Without the audio, these streets look like any other part of Lower Manhattan. With it, you hear why Broadway got its name, how the first church was funded at a wedding party and what languages were spoken here before English took over. The main stops: • Bowling Green: Fort Amsterdam and the city's first market • Pearl Street: the women who shaped New Amsterdam • Bridge Street: the taverns and lively nightlife of the colony • Broad Street: the canal that preceded Wall Street and where the first shares were traded • Wall Street: the palissade that marked the boundary between the city and the rest of the world If you've ever wondered why this particular corner of Manhattan became one of the most consequential places in the world, this walk answers it. The tour is fully self-paced. Pause whenever you want, take a detour, sit down for a coffee, the audio waits for you. No group, no fixed start time, no guide to keep up with. I worked on this tour with great pleasure. If you notice anything or have feedback, don't hesitate to let me know and please do rate the tour. Have fun!

Elke's approach of peeling back the noise of the city layer by layer is brilliant. Sitting in Bowling Green hearing about Fort Amsterdam was a perfect start.

I have walked Wall Street a hundred times and never knew it was named after an actual wall. This tour changed how I see lower Manhattan.

Really original concept. The sound design pulls you in. It was crowded near the exchange so I missed a line or two but loved the rest.

The story of Trijntje and the women of New Amsterdam was something I had never heard. Such a thoughtful walk.

Standing where the first café opened back in 1641 with that Wooden Horse story was so vivid. Elke is a fantastic narrator.
