Overview

Hello, I’m Hiroyuki Dobashi, a tour guide based in Wakayama! Discover Wakanoura, one of Wakayama’s most historic and scenic coastal areas. While most visitors know Wakayama Castle in the city center, few explore Wakanoura, the region that gave Wakayama its name and has been admired by emperors, nobles, and poets for more than 1,300 years. This walking route introduces you to a coastline filled with shrines, gardens, stone bridges, and traditional architecture. You’ll begin on Imose-yama, a small island connected by a stone bridge modeled after a famous Chinese bridge. From the hilltop pagoda built by the first lord of the Kii Domain, you’ll take in views that inspired countless waka poems. As you move through Wakanoura, you’ll visit historic sites such as Tamatsushima Shrine, Ashibe-an, Shiogama Shrine, Furobashi Bridge, Kishu Toshogu Shrine, and the peaceful promenade overlooking the bay. Many stops include monuments engraved with classical poems that were written right here, giving you a direct link to Japan’s cultural history. Wakanoura is compact, but its charm comes alive when explored slowly. I encourage you to take your time, sit down, enjoy the quiet atmosphere, and absorb the scenery that inspired generations of cultural figures. If you’re short on time, it’s better to skip a stop than to rush. You can reach the area easily by bus or rental bicycle, and the tour includes direct links for transportation. The route ends at the Takozushiyama Observatory, known for some of the best sunrise and sunset views in the region. Book this tour to experience a combination of heritage, coastal scenery, local food, and real Wakayama atmosphere in one relaxing day.

The hilltop pagoda views were incredible. Learning that emperors and poets admired this same coastline for over a thousand years was humbling.

Hiroyuki showed me a side of Wakayama tourists rarely see. The Tamatsushima Shrine and the waka poetry connections were beautifully explained.

The Kishu Toshogu Shrine was stunning. The connection to Tokugawa history and the bay views made for a perfect afternoon.

Really enjoyed the slower pace the guide recommended. Taking time at each shrine revealed details I would have rushed past otherwise.
