Overview

Agrigento is one of those cities that most visitors reduce to a single afternoon at the Valley of the Temples, then move on. That's a mistake. The historic centre above the archaeological park has its own layered, undervisited story, and putting the two together in one day gives you a proper picture of what this city actually is. My name is Matteo. I built this route with the help of my friend Rosario, who is originally from Agrigento and knows the city properly. The idea was to combine the medieval centre with the archaeological park in a single walk, covering the version of the city I'd show someone I wanted to impress: the cathedral at the top of the hill, the nuns who still sell sweets through a hatch in a monastery wall, the staircase a local arts association painted by hand, and then, eventually, the temples. The walk covers roughly 7 kilometres and moves from the historic centre down toward the archaeological park. It's a full day for most people, but it splits naturally in two if you'd rather spread it out in two days instead. Along the way you will see: • Cathedral of San Gerlando: 11th-century Norman cathedral containing an allegedly undeciphered letter said to have been dictated by the devil. • Monastery of Santo Spirito: active Cistercian monastery famous for its pistachio sweets, made to recipes dating back centuries. • Temple of Concordia: one of the best-preserved Greek temples in the world, rivalling the Parthenon in its completeness. • Temple of Hercules: the oldest structure in the Valley, partly re-erected by an English captain in 1922. • Garden of Kolymbetra: a 6-hectare garden in the valley floor, built on a 5th-century BC reservoir system. You'll find out why the Temple of Concordia survived when others didn't, what the Eleusinian mystery cults actually involved, and the story behind the embalmed body in the cathedral that locals call 'the dead man who never dies. The tour is entirely self-paced. Pause wherever you want, linger at the views, come back to a stop if you missed something. No group, no schedule, no guide waiting. First-time visitors to Sicily will love the tour but also history enthusiasts will find enough depth to keep them busy. The hard part is already done, just follow the route. All you need to do is show up at the cathedral, put it on your phone, hit play and you're good to go! 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Valley of the Temples requires a paid ticket and has multiple entrance points; buying online in advance is strongly recommended during peak season to avoid queues. The Archaeological Museum "Pietro Griffo" has a separate ticket, though a cumulative option covering both the museum and the Valley is available. The Garden of Kolymbetra can only be accessed via a combined ticket with the Valley and is not sold separately. The Cathedral of San Gerlando and the Monastery of Santo Spirito both require tickets for entry. The Artists' Staircase and Via Atenea are free to walk at any time.

The Temple of Concordia is breathtaking and the audio explaining the Doric style as I stood there made it even better. Worth the whole trip.

Loved that this tour treats the historic centre and the Valley as one story. Via Atenea as the living room of the city was a lovely framing.

Excellent content on the temples. The Icarus Fallen sculpture by the Temple of Concordia is unforgettable. Brutally hot so bring water and a hat.

The Garden of Kolymbetra was a green oasis after the temples and I almost missed it without the tour mentioning it. So glad I went.

Standing before the ruins of the Temple of Olympian Zeus and hearing the sheer scale of it was humbling. Fantastic narration.
