Overview

Bari catches most visitors off guard. The capital of Puglia sits on the Adriatic with a medieval old town that few people outside Italy take seriously, and that's exactly why it's worth your full attention. This walking tour covers the heart of Bari Vecchia and the seafront, giving you a coherent read of the city in a single day. I'm Matteo. I'm from northern Italy originally, but I've spent years travelling the south and I keep coming back to Bari. This tour came out of wanting to give people the historical context behind what they are looking at. For example, did you know that the city has Orthodox pilgrims? Norman architecture? Albanian history? and a mythology around a certain saint that stretches all the way to Amsterdam? None of that is obvious just from walking around. The route starts at the Basilica of San Nicola and works through the tangle of Bari Vecchia, past the Cathedral and the Swabian Castle, through the famous orecchiette street and into Piazza Mercantile, before finishing at the Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto on the seafront. Key stops along the way: - Basilica of San Nicola: one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Europe for both Catholic and Orthodox Christians - Cathedral of San Sabino: Romanesque architecture built over a Byzantine foundation, with relics going back to the 9th century - Swabian Castle: a Norman fortress rebuilt by Frederick II and later transformed into a Renaissance residence - Via delle Orecchiette: women making pasta by hand outdoors every day, a genuine working tradition - Piazza Mercantile: the medieval commercial center, anchored by the notorious Column of Justice The audio gives you the context that walking alone won't. Why Bari matters to the Eastern Church. What the manna of Saint Nicholas actually is. How this city connects to Santa Claus. The tour is entirely self-paced. Start when you want, pause for as long as you need and pick up exactly where you left off, with no group and no schedule to keep. If you want one day in Bari that actually makes sense of the place, this is a good way to spend it. πŸ‘‰ Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Basilica of San Nicola and the Cathedral of San Sabino are free to enter outside of services. The Swabian Castle requires a ticket and no advance booking is needed. The Pinacoteca Corrado Giaquinto at the end of the route also requires a ticket, available at the door. The Margherita Theatre and Fortino di Sant'Antonio open only for events and exhibitions.

Watching the women make orecchiette by hand on Via dell'Arco Basso was the moment I fell for Bari. The audio pointed me right to it. Unforgettable.

Good honest tour of a city people skip. San Nicola basilica is powerful and the crusades history was new to me. It was hot so I took it slow.

Bari Vecchia is a maze and I loved getting a little lost. Piazza Mercantile and the old council palace stories were great.

The Swabian Castle anchored the whole walk for me. Solid commentary. A couple of stops near the port were noisy but fine.

The Lungomare at sunset after the old town was perfect. Hearing it is the second longest seafront in Italy made me appreciate the scale.
