Overview

Bergamo splits neatly into two worlds: the medieval Città Alta perched on the hill, and the modern lower city below. This tour keeps you in the upper town, where most of what makes Bergamo worth visiting is concentrated. I'm Matteo a local, born and raised here, and what I've tried to do with this walk is show you the city the way I'd show a friend: with the context that makes things actually interesting, not just the monuments themselves. The route covers around 1.8 kilometres and takes between 80 and 100 minutes, though you set the pace. Pause whenever you want, skip what doesn't interest you, come back to anything you want to hear again. The walk starts at Piazza Mercato delle Scarpe, the arrival point of the funicular from the lower town, and moves through the historic core before finishing at Colle Aperto, where a second funicular climbs further to San Vigilio hill if you have extra time. Along the way, the audio fills you in on why certain streets are named what they are, what happened here during the Venetian occupation, which local inventions shaped the wider world. Key stops along the route: • Piazza Vecchia: the civic heart of Bergamo for centuries, surrounded by medieval and Renaissance architecture • Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore: built in 1137 as a vow to the Virgin Mary during a plague, and extraordinary inside • Colleoni Chapel: one of the finest Renaissance funerary monuments in northern Italy • Torre del Campanone: the civic tower that still rings 100 times every night at 10pm, a Venetian-era tradition • The Venetian Walls: a UNESCO World Heritage site encircling the upper town, built from 1561 and never once besieged This tour works well for first-time visitors who want substance rather than surface, and equally for anyone who has passed through Bergamo before and left feeling like they missed something. Morning light is best for the walls and the park viewpoints. 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. Piazza Vecchia, the Venetian Walls and the Parco delle Rimembranze are all freely accessible. The Colleoni Chapel have free entry, as does the Sant'Alessandro Cathedral. The Torre del Campanone and Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore charges for entry but requires no advance booking. La Rocca fortress and its museum can be visited independently. The baptistery in Piazza Duomo is accessible if you get the ticket for "Museo del Bernareggi" that is still in the same Piazza.

Matteo's narration felt like walking around with a friend who actually knows the city. The story at the Colleoni Chapel had us cracking up.

Good tour with lots of interesting stops. Took us closer to three hours than the suggested 80 minutes because we kept going inside things. A couple of the audio segments could have been shorter.

Did this with my husband on our last day in Bergamo and wished we'd done it first. The main square alone was worth it.

Took the funicular up and just followed the audio around the old town. Great views from the park and the walls. Highly recommend going in the morning.

Nice self-guided walk, well structured. The audio is clear and Matteo is engaging. Some stops felt a bit rushed though, especially around Piazza Duomo.
