Overview

Welcome to Helen’s self-guided tour around Birmingham, a vibrant city steeped in history and bustling with modern energy. I am a Chartered Geographer with over 25 years’ experience of teaching secondary school students and leading fieldwork. I regularly bring GCSE students on fieldwork in Birmingham city centre, and I feel that regular visitors to the city miss a lot of the history, architectural marvels and hidden gems that the city has to offer. During the tour, you'll discover the rich heritage of Birmingham, from its industrial past to its bold attempts at a sustainable future. From the historic canals that once fuelled the Industrial Revolution to the contemporary rooftop gardens of the library, each step unveils a new chapter in the city's story. We begin our tour at the Mailbox. We’ll walk along the rejuvenated canal side locations, taking in historic sites, such as the Gas Street Basin and the Roundhouse, to more modern sights such as the Sea Life Centre and the International Convention Centre. We’ll end our tour in the vibrant and welcoming gay village. The route is around 3 miles in length and should take 2 to 3 hours to complete. Whilst linear in nature, it does also follow a roughly circular route around New Street Station and Grand Central. Prepare to be captivated by the blend of old and new architecture, as Victorian red-brick buildings stand beside sleek modern structures, showcasing the city's evolution over the years. Along the way, I’ll be revealing some insider recommendations and uncovering local haunts – I can guarantee you won’t be short of places to stop off and rest for a while and you might as well have the odd coffee as there are plenty of free-to-use public toilets along this route at sites 1, 5, 7, 9 and 13. Join me on this immersive journey into the diverse tapestry of cultures that make Birmingham a melting pot of traditions and innovation, where every corner holds a tale waiting to be discovered!
