Overview

Explore Cagliari with a self-guided audio walking tour that helps you understand what you’re seeing as you walk, so you can enjoy the city with clarity and confidence, without rushing or feeling lost. Hi, I’m Matteo. I’ve always been drawn to cities where history is layered into everyday life, and Cagliari surprised me more than I expected. I came here for the sea and stayed for the stories. This guide was created with the help of my university friend Gianluca, who was born and raised in Cagliari, and whose local insight helped me shape a route that makes sense on foot and feels true to the city. My approach is simple: clear explanations, real context, and just enough detail to help you enjoy what’s around you. The walk follows a natural flow through the city, starting from the lower districts near the port and gradually climbing toward the Castello, the medieval heart of Cagliari, before descending again. As you move, the city unfolds step by step: civic buildings facing the sea, monumental stairways, fortified gates, narrow streets, panoramic terraces, markets, museums, and ancient ruins carved directly into the rock. Along the route, you’ll encounter key places such as: • Palazzo Civico and Cagliari’s relationship with the sea • Bastion of Saint Remy and its panoramic terrace • The covered promenade and Spanish fortifications • Lions’ Gate, the Elephant Tower, and the San Pancrazio Tower • The Castello district and its medieval streets • Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Sanctuary of the Martyrs • Cittadella dei Musei and Sardinia’s ancient past • San Benedetto Civic Market • The Roman Amphitheatre The pace is entirely yours. You can pause for coffee, lunch, photos, or a museum visit and resume whenever you like. The narration is conversational and grounded, more like walking with someone who knows the city well than listening to a lecture. It fits easily into a half day and leaves you free to continue exploring afterward. This tour is ideal if you want to truly understand Cagliari beyond its beaches, without joining a group or following a rigid schedule. Important ticket tips: Some stops along the route require a ticket, including the Roman Amphitheatre, the Tower of San Pancrazio, the Cittadella dei Musei, the Crypt of Santa Restituta and the Covered Walk. These can be visited individually or with a cumulative ticket valid for one week, which offers better value if you plan to enter several sites. Most landmarks can be enjoyed freely from the outside, and tickets are generally easy to purchase on site, allowing you to decide as you go.

The Castello district views were breathtaking. The tour explained the different layers of Cagliari's history from Phoenicians to Aragonese. Truly comprehensive.

Great way to understand Cagliari beyond the beaches. The Roman amphitheatre and medieval towers told fascinating stories. Good local insights too.

The old quarter sections were brilliant. Learning about the defensive towers and the citadel while walking the ancient streets was an amazing experience.

Really helped me appreciate the city's long history. The panoramic viewpoints were well chosen and the narration was engaging without being overwhelming.
