Overview

Discover Como with a self-guided audio walking tour that helps you understand what you’re seeing without rushing, so you can move through the city with confidence and enjoy it at your own pace. This tour is designed to give you context, orientation and the kind of details that make places stick, without the pressure of keeping up with a group. I’m Matteo, born and raised in Bergamo and I created this tour together with my friend Dario, who grew up in Como. While I guide you through the story and structure of the city, Dario shared the local knowledge, habits, and lesser-known details that only someone from here really notices. Our goal was simple: explain Como clearly, connect its history to what you see today and help you enjoy the walk rather than overwhelm you with dates or trivia. The route covers about 2.5 km and unfolds naturally from the area near the train and bus station into the historic center, then out along the lake. You’ll move from the Roman origins of the city to its medieval defenses, lively squares, the cathedral area and finally the lakeside monuments that define Como today. You can follow the suggested order or jump in wherever it’s most convenient for you, starting from Porta Torre or another central point if that suits your plans better. Along the way, the audio plays exactly when you need it, guiding you street by street while leaving you free to stop, look around, enter churches, take photos, or pause for a coffee. You’ll hear clear explanations about architecture, legends and local rivalries, stories about silk, science, and literature and small details many visitors pass by without noticing. You’ll pass through and learn about key places such as: • Porta Torre, the monumental medieval gate that once defended the city • Piazza San Fedele, built over the Roman forum and still a social hub • The Duomo of Como and the Broletto, where civic and religious power meet • Piazza Cavour, the city’s living room by the lake • The Tempio Voltiano and the lakeside monuments dedicated to Alessandro Volta • The funicular to Brunate, with the option to reach panoramic viewpoints above the lake The pace is flexible and works well whether you want a relaxed walk spread across the day or a focused exploration of the historic center with optional extensions. It’s ideal if you like understanding places while you walk, without fixed schedules or the feeling of being rushed. If you want to see Como properly, but avoid wandering without context or sticking to rigid tour times, this walk gives you structure without taking away your freedom. 👉 Important ticket tips: The Cathedral of Como is free to enter and can be visited during the walk without booking. The funicular to Brunate requires a ticket, which can only be purchased at the station; on weekends it’s best to allow extra time due to queues. Entry to the Voltiano Lighthouse in Brunate is optional and paid on site, while most lakeside walks, squares, and monuments can be enjoyed freely.

The Duomo section was incredible. Learning about the mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles while standing inside made the architecture so much clearer.

Beautiful walk from the historic center to the lakefront. The silk industry history was something I knew nothing about and found really interesting.

Great tour for understanding Como beyond the lake views. The medieval walls and the Roman origins were well explained. Nice pace throughout.

Loved every stop on this walk. The old town has such charm and the audio helped me notice details I would have walked right past otherwise.

Good balance of architecture and local history. The lakefront section was lovely and the information about famous residents added nice context.
