Overview

Hi, I’m Lukas Frei. I was born in Zurich but spent a lot of my time here in Basel, so this city feels like a second home. I studied cultural history and worked with museums across Switzerland, which taught me that no story is too small to be worth sharing and Basel has plenty of them. Sitting right on the border with France and Germany, this lively river city blends Swiss charm, French flair and German precision into one irresistible experience. We’ll begin our self-guided walking tour at the Middle Bridge, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks and the perfect spot to get your bearings on both sides of the Rhine. From there, we’ll make our way through Basel’s Old Town and end at Barfüßerplatz, a lively square that still carries traces of the monks who once walked it barefoot. You’ll meet some unforgettable characters, from Erasmus, the philosopher once called “the last man who knew everything,” to Jean Tinguely, the local artist who turned scrap metal into kinetic art. You’ll uncover how a barefoot order of monks gave Barfüßerplatz its name, and why Basel might just be the birthplace of confetti. Basel isn’t just about history though. You’ll hear about the city’s legendary carnival, its obsession with chocolate, and how locals float down the Rhine every summer with waterproof bags instead of beach towels. By the end, you’ll see why this small city has made such a big mark, from pioneering humanism to hosting today’s world-famous Art Basel fair. During the walk, you’ll discover: • Where Erasmus lived, taught, and is buried • The connection between Lindt chocolate and Sprüngli • The story behind the Carnival Fountain • Why locals are so proud of their carnival traditions • And much more Tips: Wear comfy shoes, bring a water bottle, and take your time, Basel rewards slow explorers. The tour takes about an hour, though you’ll want to stop for photos, chocolate, and maybe a coffee. Best time to go: Any time of year works, but early mornings and daylight hours let you enjoy the architecture and atmosphere with fewer crowds. Whether you’re into art, history, or just love a good story, this tour will make you fall in love with Basel.

An excellent little stroll through Basel. The pace was relaxed and the stories about Erasmus and the Barfuesserplatz stuck with me. It felt doable in an hour and left room for photos and a chocolate stop.

Loved the mix of old town lanes and riverside views. I followed my own route from the Rathaus to the Rhine.

It runs smoothly on the phone. I chose a slower pace to savor the architecture. The Cathedral view was worth the climb.

Surprisingly atmospheric at dawn with quiet streets and the Rhine shimmering. A lovely way to start the day.

As a visitor with only a morning, I appreciated the clear pacing and the short breaks for photos. The Erasmus house and Tinguely references felt vivid without feeling like a lecture.
