Welcome to this tour of the Brussels no one knows. My name is Derek Blyth, and I’m your guide today. You’ll explore hidden corners like Rue du Chien Marin, with its quirky street name and tiny shrine, and admire historic relics such as the 12th-century Black Tower, tucked between modern buildings. You might have been told that Brussels is a boring city, a bureaucratic capital, not somewhere to spend much time. Well, I have a different story to tell. I believe Brussels is one of Europe’s most fascinating cities—rich in history, architectural heritage, and culture, with hidden streets and spaces waiting to be discovered. I’ve spent the past 35 years exploring this city and am still uncovering new places. I first arrived on a rainy day in November 1989 and gradually came to understand the city through my work as a journalist. Later, I wrote books about Brussels, and now I take people like you around the streets where I’ve spent most of my life, revealing the hidden stories and secrets I’ve discovered.
