Overview

Welcome to Moira’’s Self-Guided Tour around Edinburgh to the village of Duddingston! I will show you a less well-known walk, slightly off the beaten track but nonetheless one that is steeped in the past and beauty. This is a wonderful and informative experience for anyone to enjoy - however a certain level of fitness is required (or you can take a taxi). During this amazing experience, you will discover how Duddingston Village is a magical slice of history, of art, of nature, of architecture and of tales. In these small streets, we will meet Mary Queen of Scots, Bonnie Prince Charlie, Raeburn and Walter Scott - a beheaded Queen, a would-be King, a famous artist, and a renowned writer. The walk goes from the old town of Edinburgh around the magnificent Holyrood Park. The streets of Duddigston, the houses in them are beautiful and deeply reminiscent of the past. Sometimes, and in some places, it is possible to get a feel for a place and its people by visiting, not the main sites, but one place that encapsulates it all - Duddingston offers this and more. I sincerely hope you enjoy this meander through the past and into the present. Also, you will learn everything about one of the oldest working Churches in Scotland and it’s amazing history. Plus, this tour offers fantastic photo opportunities, the chance to walk at your own pace, and explore beautiful gardens and scenic places. So let’s get started. We have a recommended route to follow on the map, however, you are free to take the route that suits you best. If you choose to walk over Holyrood Park to Duddingston this is also an option. This tour is designed for you to do at your leisure. This activity includes: A lot of walking! What a refreshing way to explore Edinburgh. The self guided route felt relaxed and well paced, with plenty of time to snap photos by Duddingston Loch. I followed the suggested route but I also wandered a bit and discovered tiny gardens along the way.

Fantastic self guided stroll through Canongate and Holyrood Park. The app kept a nice pace letting me stop for photos and still stay on track. Weather was mild which helped the views from the loch.

Surprisingly varied and peaceful. The hidden garden at Dundas Close is a delight and I liked how the route wandered to Duddingston Kirk. To be fair my legs were tired by the late afternoon and I slowed down a bit.

The village feels like stepping back in time. The loch views and the historic pub were highlights.

Walk your own pace and soak it in. The route around Holyrood Park then Duddingston felt magical especially with the light dropping over the loch. I chose a few detours and it still felt cohesive.
