Edinburgh Old Town Self-Guided Walking Tour

Welcome to Jule’s self-guided tour around Edinburgh’s historic Old Town. See one of Edinburgh’s UNESCO World Heritage sites for yourself and learn more about Edinburgh’s fascinating history on the way. Aside from well-known landmarks such as the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle and St. Giles’ Cathedral, you will discover hidden gems such as the Writer’s Museum and the Grassmarket. Learn about the people who walked these historic cobblestones in the past – from famous authors like Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott, to shady citizens like Deacon Brodie and even a wee dog. On this tour, you will discover some of Edinburgh’s finest and most fascinating stories alongside Scottish and Edinburgh history: the Scottish reformation, why the English Civil War was actually sparked in Edinburgh and who the Jacobites were. Your guide will be Jule. Originally from Germany, Jule moved to Edinburgh in 2017 to study a Masters’ degree in English Literature. After finishing, she decided to stay and has been working as a full-time tour guide around the city since 2019. She has a degree in Celtic Studies as well as English Literature, and feels passionately about Edinburgh’s and Scotland’s history. She is available for history tours, Harry Potter tours, dark history tours, Outlander tours and Edinburgh Castle tours. This walk will take you through medieval Edinburgh, along the Royal Mile and all the way up to Edinburgh Castle. From there, you will head down to the Grassmarket and past Greyfriars Graveyard. You will be back on the Royal Mile at the end of the tour, just a bit further up from where you started.
