Overview

Welcome to your self-guided audio tour of the Left Bank of Paris. This is a two-hour walking tour of the two most popular areas of the Left Bank: Saint-Germain-des-Prés and the Latin Quarter. The Left Bank is the oldest area of the city, its history dating back to before the Romans. Few tourists know that Paris has the remains of Roman baths, hidden in plain sight, in the center of Paris or the vestiges of a Roman arena that once hosted gladiator combats. This tour will take you to these ancient remnants, as well as to more modern locations : • The literary heart of Paris in Saint-Germain-des-Prés • The student district of the Sorbonne • The scenic Luxembourg Gardens and • The historic Latin Quarter Today the Left Bank is a trendy area that still retains its charm and historic atmosphere. We will have fun discovering it and peeling away the centuries of history. My name is Ellen and I have lived in Paris for almost 40 years, immersing myself in the city's historic atmosphere. I take visitors to the famous landmarks, but I also show them the hidden treasures that make this city so special. I like sharing the secrets of this city, the surprising anecdotes and back-stories that provide the context for the larger picture. With this tour, you will see the Left Bank at your own pace, guided by the flow of my narrative, allowing you the leisure of lingering, taking photos, exploring and enjoying what you see, pausing the tour as you wish then jumping back in when you feel ready. No need for a tour group, nor a guide book, I will help you navigate both the landmark locations and the charming back streets of the Left Bank, independently and at your own rhythm. 👉 Important ticket tips: please note that several museums mentioned in this tour charge admission although entry is optional. • The Cluny Museum, which houses the Roman baths and the Unicorn Tapestries, is worth booking in advance, particularly in high season. • The Panthéon also has an entry fee; visits are manageable without advance booking on quieter days, but expect queues on weekends. • The Delacroix Museum in the Furstemberg Square is small, affordable, and rarely crowded. • The Luxembourg Gardens, the Arena of Lutetia, and the exterior courtyards of the Sorbonne and Cluny Palace are all free and open to the public. So put on some good walking shoes, charge your smartphone and get ready for a pleasurable stroll through the hidden corners of Paris. Each street tells a story - every building has a history. Join me in a journey to discover the rich cultural heritage of the Left Bank.

Ellen knows the hidden Paris. The tiny Furstemberg Square was the most romantic spot and I never would have found it on my own.

Loved learning Saint-Germain-des-Pres is the oldest church in the city while standing right in front of it. Two hours flew by.

Lovely walk through Saint-Germain and the Latin Quarter. The literary cafes history was great. It drizzled a little so I skipped the gardens.

The Roman baths and Cluny were a surprise tucked into such a busy area. Ellen weaves the layers of history together beautifully.

Ending near the Pantheon felt grand. The Saint-Etienne du Mont stop with its carved screen was stunning. Such a thoughtful route.
