Overview

Genoa sits on the northwest Italian coast, compressed between the Apennine mountains and the Ligurian Sea. With around 580,000 people, it is the capital of Liguria and one of the busiest ports in the Mediterranean. It was once a maritime republic powerful enough to rival Venice, and that history is still visible in its palaces, its cathedral and its labyrinth of narrow alleys called caruggi. Hi, I'm Matteo. I've spent years exploring Genoa with a friend who grew up here, and between his knowledge and my own obsessive note-taking, I know which corners are worth stopping at and which buildings have a story most people walk past. This tour is the result of that. The route runs about five kilometers, starting from Genova Brignole station and ending at the Old Port. It works well for first-time visitors who want to cover the main ground independently, without a group or a fixed pace. You can pause the audio whenever you want, double back or linger somewhere that catches your interest. Key stops along the way include: • Genova Cathedral (San Lorenzo): home to an unexploded WWII shell still on display in the nave • Piazza De Ferrari: the city's central square, with a fountain that has a surprisingly grim backstory • Via Garibaldi: a UNESCO-listed street of Renaissance palaces, now partly used as city offices and museums • Christopher Columbus's house and Porta Soprana: the birthplace of the explorer, alongside one of the old city gates • The Old Port: redesigned by Renzo Piano in 1992 and now home to one of Europe's largest aquariums The audio explains the politics behind the black-and-white striped church facades, the Genoese origins of denim and the strange journey of what some believed to be the Holy Grail. Morning visits tend to be quieter, particularly inside the churches and along Via Garibaldi. 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, the Basilica Santissima Annunziata and the Basilica di San Siro are all free to enter. Columbus's house requires a ticket available at the door. The Aquarium, BioSphere and Bigo panoramic elevator each require separate tickets; the aquarium recommends booking in advance for weekends and can take two to three hours to visit fully.

Matteo's tour was perfect for understanding Genoa's layers. The walk from Brignole to the port covered so much ground. The caruggi felt like a maze but the directions were clear.

The Christopher Columbus house and Porta Soprana were highlights I would have missed without this guide. The cathedral section was thorough and the San Matteo square was charming.

Great introduction to Genoa. Via XX Settembre is beautiful and the explanation of the maritime republic history gave good context. Ended at the Old Port which was a nice finish.

The Belvedere Castelletto views were stunning. Matteo's tip to take the lift up was perfect. The whole route from the station to the aquarium area was well planned.

Loved learning about the Strada Nuova palaces on Via Garibaldi. The audio quality was excellent and the pace let me stop for coffee in Piazza de Ferrari without feeling rushed.
