Overview

Lecce gets called the Florence of the South, which is accurate enough but doesn't quite prepare you for it. I'm Matteo, and I put this tour together with help from my friend Davide, who grew up here and has been telling me how underrated his hometown is for as long as I've known him. After visiting with him, I have to admit he was right. The tour starts at Porta Rudiae and moves through the city center on foot. You'll cover the Giravolte neighborhood, a medieval tangle of alleys deliberately built to disorient anyone entering from the gate, before reaching the monumental Piazza del Duomo. From there the route continues through Roman ruins and the civic heart of the city before ending at the Sigismondo Castromediano Museum, the oldest public museum in Puglia. The walk works well for first-time visitors who want more than a surface read, and for anyone who has been to Lecce before and wants to understand what they saw. Key stops along the route: • Piazza del Duomo: a walled square opened to the public only in the 18th century, now the heart of Lecce Baroque • Roman Amphitheatre: built under Augustus, partly buried under the city for centuries • Piazza Sant'Oronzo: site of a mosaic it's bad luck to step on, and a column whose story begins in Venice • Basilica di Santa Croce: 150 years in the making and considered the defining example of Lecce Baroque • Charles V Castle: the largest castle in Puglia, rebuilt in 1539 to resist Ottoman raids The audio plays as you walk, filling in what you would not notice on your own: the founding myth carved into Porta Rudiae, the reason Via delle Giravolte twists the way it does, and the story of the architect who hid from a bishop after a structural failure mid-build. You set the pace. Stop, wander, double back and resume without losing your place. If you have any interest in Roman history, Salento ceramics or Baroque architecture, this tour is an efficient way in. 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Cathedral, Bell Tower and Basilica di Santa Croce are ticketed venues. A combined ticket covering the Cathedral, Basilica and several nearby churches is available on site or online and remains valid for 15 days. A separate bell tower ticket is available if you only want the rooftop view. The Castle's internal courtyard is free to enter; visiting the exhibition rooms requires a guided tour ticket purchased on site. The Sigismondo Castromediano Museum is free and open Tuesday through Sunday.

Santa Croce is the most over the top beautiful facade I have ever seen. The audio built it up so by the time I turned the corner I actually gasped.

Piazza del Duomo in Lecce is like walking into a stage set. Hearing it was once a closed courtyard for the clergy made it click.

Lovely tour of a city I almost skipped. The Roman Amphitheatre right in Piazza Sant'Oronzo was a great surprise. Hot afternoon though.

Getting lost on purpose in the Giravolte alleys was a joy. Matteo and Davide clearly love this place and it shows.

Good walk. The Face of Love legend was a sweet little thing to look up for. A couple of stops were busy but easy enough to follow.
