Overview

This self-guided walking tour will take you through the City of Westminster, which is the heart of the UK government, starting at the Houses of Parliament and finishing at Buckingham Palace, the London home of the British Monarch. Along the way we will stop at Westminster Abbey, Downing Street, The Horse Guards, The Mall and St James’s Palace (the official home of the British Monarch). Many first-time visitors to London will want to know about the general history of the country and to see some of the UK’s most famous buildings. This walking tour will do both. We will also delve deeply into the stories of the Kings and Queens who led the nation and see some of the houses they built and lived in. That story goes right up to the present day with our current monarch and heir to the throne. London has a fascinating history and I want to tell you the stories that I find most interesting. I’m also a visitor to this country even though I’ve now been here for over 30 years. Please come along on the journey where I will tell you stories that both first-time and return visitors will find educational and entertaining. Hi my name is Daniel. I am originally from New York but I moved to London as a student. I currently work at the National Portrait Gallery and has previously worked in all the major London museums including the British Museum, National Gallery, V&A, Science Museum and others. I am an official tour guide and gained his first qualification in 2018. I am an art historian with a love of social history and is available for private walking and museum tours as well. This tour begins outside Westminster Underground Station! Stops on the walk: • Houses of Parliament • Statue of Winston Churchill • Statue of Dame Milicent Fawcett • Statue of Nelson Mandela • St Margaret’s Church • Westminster Abbey • Red telephone boxes • The Cenotaph • Downing Street • The Banqueting House • The Horse Guards • St James’s Park • Duke of York’s Column • Marlborough House • St James’s Palace • Clarence House • Buckingham Palace The route is flat with no steps and 1.6m (2.6km) in length. It should take just under 2 hours to complete depending on your walking speed.

Beautiful walk through central London. The pace was nice and the views from The Mall were a highlight. It felt calm despite the crowds and I loved how the audio hints timed the stops.

I did this self guided tour with just my phone and a sense of curiosity. It kept to a relaxed pace and the skyline near Buckingham Palace was stunning at golden hour.

Surprisingly immersive for a self guided route. I paused at the Cenotaph and the church and learned little stories while walking between landmarks.

To be fair the route is flat and easy. I enjoyed the density of sights from Parliament to St James Park. My favorite moment was the time near Marlborough House.

The audio was clear and the pacing felt just right. I loved not needing a guide and still learning a lot about royal history.
