Overview

This two-hour walk takes you from medieval gates to mechanical elephants, covering how Nantes went from independent duchy to post-industrial art city. You'll see the cathedral that took 457 years to finish, the castle where religious wars ended, and the shipyards that became a sculpture park. I'm Mathilde, I grew up here, worked as an architect in Paris, then came back when a restoration project brought me home. I started guiding because people kept asking questions about the buildings, and that sparked an interest to tell more of those stories, and that ended up becoming my job. The route starts at Porte Saint-Pierre, the old eastern entrance where Henry IV walked in to sign the Edict of Nantes, then moves through the cathedral, the ducal castle and the neoclassical centre built in the 1780s. From there you'll pass the execution square from the Revolution, the shopping arcade carved into a hillside and the riverside memorial that finally addresses what funded all those elegant façades. It ends at Les Machines de l'Île, where a 48-tonne elephant walks around the abandoned shipyards. Main stops include: • Nantes Cathedral – taller than Notre-Dame in Paris, holds Anne of Brittany's heart in a golden casket • Castle of the Dukes of Brittany – where the Edict of Nantes was signed in 1598, ending decades of religious war • Passage Pommeraye – three-level 1843 shopping arcade built into a nine-meter slope • Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery – underground passage built into the quay where slave ships were fitted out • Les Machines de l'Île – the working shipyard turned sculpture park with rideable mechanical creatures The audio tells you what actually happened in these spaces, who paid for what and why certain monuments got hidden during the Revolution. You can pause whenever you want, go at your own speed and skip sections if something doesn't interest you. Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is up to you. The cathedral and castle courtyard are free. The Museum of Nantes History inside the castle requires a ticket but no advance booking. Les Machines de l'Île charges separately for the elephant ride and carousel, and those do sell out in summer.

The mechanical elephant at Les Machines de l'Ile is everything I hoped and the tour builds up to it brilliantly from the medieval gate.

Learning the cathedral took 457 years to finish put the whole city's stubborn history in perspective. A fantastic two hours.

Passage Pommeraye is the most beautiful shopping arcade I have ever seen. The audio pointed me to details I would have rushed past.

Great walk from the Castle of the Dukes of Brittany to the old shipyards. My feet were tired by the end but the variety kept me going.

The Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery was powerful and handled with real care. Nantes does not hide from its past and neither does this tour.
