Overview

Most people visit Pisa, take the photo and leave. This tour covers the Piazza dei Miracoli properly, in about an hour, so you actually understand what you're looking at. Hi! I’m Anastasia, Director and tour guide at DiscoveryPisa. Half German and half Italian and I studied Foreign Languages and Literature here in Pisa, where my passion for art and history grew. I’ll be your voice throughout this audio guide, sharing the stories, art, and history that make this city so special. What I focus on is meaning: why this square was built the way it was, what the medieval architects were communicating, and what still connects this city to its past today. The tour centres entirely on the Miracle Square, the walled meadow that holds four of the most significant Romanesque monuments in Europe. I take you through the square in a sequence that builds a single coherent picture. By the end, you'll understand how the whole ensemble was designed to represent the arc of human life, from birth to death, and why that idea was considered radical for its time. The main landmarks covered: • Piazza dei Miracoli: the square's layout and the symbolic logic behind it • Baptistery of St John: the largest baptistery in the Catholic world, built across two distinct architectural periods • Pisa Cathedral: Romanesque architecture that outranked every other cathedral in Europe when it was completed • Camposanto Monumentale: a monumental cemetery that was originally planned as something else entirely • Leaning Tower of Pisa: the bell tower, its construction history and the engineering story behind the lean The audio covers the building decisions driven by rivalry, the fire that gutted the cathedral interior, the bomb damage that set restoration back decades, and the details that most visitors walk past without registering. The tour is fully self-paced with no fixed schedule. You can pause, take a break or stop mid-route and pick up exactly where you left off the next day. Early morning visits reward you with softer light on the white marble and noticeably thinner crowds, particularly around the tower. One hour, and you'll never look at that leaning tower photo the same way again. 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Leaning Tower requires advance booking and fills up quickly, particularly in high season. The Cathedral, Baptistery and Camposanto Monumentale each require a ticket but can generally be visited without pre-booking, though availability can vary in peak months. The square itself is free to enter and walk through.

Finally understood why it is called the Square of Miracles. Anastasia packs so much into about an hour and the Baptistery being the largest in the Catholic world stuck with me.

The Giovanni Pisano pulpit inside the cathedral was the unexpected star. I would have glanced and moved on without the audio explaining it.

Great primer before going up the tower. Hearing it is really the cathedral's bell tower made it click. Busy with crowds but that is Pisa.

The Camposanto was so peaceful and the story of it being meant as a second church was fascinating. Loved the pace.

Good honest tour of the piazza. The Pisa versus Florence rivalry and how they changed the square entrance was a nice detail. Hot midday sun though.
