Overview

Fira gets millions of visitors a year and most of them photograph the same three views! This tour walks the caldera rim from the heart of Fira north through Firostefani and into Imerovigli, ending at Skaros, the fortified medieval capital of Santorini for 600 years and never once taken by force! The route is about 6 kilometres, descending to the old harbor at Skala before climbing back up and continuing north to the cliff edge at Skaros Rock! It suits first-time visitors who want more than a selfie trail, solo travellers who prefer no group and no fixed schedule, and anyone who finds standard tours thin on actual history. I'm Elena. I grew up in Santorini and spent ten years as a field technician at the Akrotiri excavation site before deciding to start guiding! The audio covers stories like: the shipowner who funded the cable car and protected the donkey drivers in the same clause, the seven years a local painter spent on the cathedral ceiling, the Bronze Age city whose residents evacuated so precisely before the eruption that not one skeleton was found! The five stops that anchor the route: • Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral: rebuilt after the 1956 earthquake! • Museum of Prehistoric Thera: Akrotiri frescoes including blue monkeys! • Three Bells of Fira: the most reproduced image in Greek tourism! • Firostefani Central Square: where the photographs everyone labels "Oia" are actually taken! • Skaros Castle Ruins: the medieval capital! Start before 8am if you can and bring water and sunscreen with you! The rim path between Firostefani and Imerovigli is exposed and crowded by midday in summer. Early morning is when the whole stretch is quiet but remember that the tour pauses and resumes whenever you want so if you need a break feel free to rest and when you are ready get back to it! Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera and the Archaeological Museum of Thera both require a ticket but neither needs advance booking! Megaro Gyzi Cultural Center also charges admission and is walk-in. All churches, viewpoints and the Skaros trail are free!

Walking the caldera rim all the way to Skaros was the best decision of our trip. The audio led us past the same famous views everyone photographs and then far beyond them.

The Three Bells of Fira are even better in person and knowing the story behind that postcard image made me appreciate it more. Just stunning.

The Museum of Prehistoric Thera was the one I almost skipped and I am so glad the tour insisted. It really is where Santorini's story begins.

Ending at the Skaros Castle ruins as the light softened was magical. You feel the whole medieval history out there on the rock.

Gorgeous walk. The climb up from the old harbour was tough in the heat so we took the cable car back. Everything else was flawless.
