Overview

Siena is a Tuscan city of around 53,000 people, built on three hills and still split into seventeen historic neighborhoods. This route covers eleven stops from the old city gate to the bell tower above the main square. This guide is built for first-timers who want the full picture in a single day and for independent travelers who'd rather skip a group and set their own pace. I'm Matteo, a licensed tour guide from Bergamo and for this route I worked with my Tuscan friend Guido, who studied in Siena and ended up staying for good. The walk starts at Porta Camollia and moves through the Medicean Fortress, the Basilica Cateriniana di San Domenico and the old Fontebranda fountain before reaching the cathedral complex and Piazza del Campo. Along the way the audio covers: why the city is split into seventeen contrade, what the Palio actually means to the people who run it and how a banking family's palazzo became home to the oldest bank in the world. Highlights along the route: • Siena Cathedral, a Gothic landmark with one of the most detailed mosaic floors in Italy • Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped square at the heart of the city's medieval layout • Torre del Mangia, the third-tallest tower in Italy with views over the rooftops • Basilica Cateriniana di San Domenico, tied closely to the life of St. Catherine of Siena • Porta Camollia, one of the city's oldest gates with its own founding legend Everything is self-paced. Pause for lunch, linger at the Duomo, pick it back up whenever you're ready, no schedule to follow. Mornings work best, before the day-trip crowds from Florence arrive and the light on the cathedral facade is at its clearest. 👉 Important ticket tips: whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The cathedral complex, including the Piccolomini Library and Baptistery, needs a ticket and advance booking helps in high season. The Torre del Mangia requires its own ticket on site. The basilica and the main square are free to enter. Palazzo Salimbeni is rarely open to the public and would need separate arrangement if you're curious to see inside.
