Overview

Sligo sits right where one of Europe's shortest rivers meets the sea and well it's totally boxed in by a flat-topped mountain to the north and a cairn-capped one to the south. So this self-guided audio tour it covers sixteen stops right through the town centre. It's really built for first-timers with a morning to spare or history readers who want way more than dates and honestly travelers who'd just rather set their own pace than follow a big group around. I'm Nora Quinn. Sligo isn't my hometown, Dublin is, but a dear friend lives here, and between visiting her all the time and building this tour with her, the town has become somewhere I just know so well and really care about. Starting near City Hall, the route follows the river before weaving through these historic side streets, open plazas and ancient monastic grounds. Along the way, you're gonna see: • Sligo Abbey, which is the town's only surviving medieval building... it was founded back in the 1250s. • The W.B. Yeats statue, with its bronze coat actually engraved with lines from over 150 poems! • The Model, home to the Niland Collection of Jack B. Yeats paintings. • Hargadon's, this 1864 pub that's still holding onto its original counters and snugs. Listening as you walk, it just brings these locations to life by linking physical buildings to real people. You'll hear how a pocketknife bought right on a local street saved dozens of lives on the Titanic, why medieval friars hid their treasures under Abbey floors and how our fast-flowing river drove centuries of maritime trade. Late afternoon is really the best time to start this route as the soft light over the Garavogue River brings out the details in the stone facades and the traditional pubs along the way start to light up. By the time you reach that final stop, you'll view Sligo through the eyes of someone who actually lives here. So let's go discover Sligo together!
