Overview

Fáilte, is mise Ben! (Welcome, I'm Ben), I’m a native of Dublin, or a Dub as we call ourselves, and I can’t wait to take you on a walk through the real medieval heart of my city. On this self guided walking tour, we’re going to circumnavigate the footprint of old Dublin, exactly as it existed over a thousand years ago. Together, we’ll follow the line of the 13th-century Norman city walls, step onto streets shaped by the Vikings, and spot the original markers and stone pillars that once guarded the ancient city gates. We’ll wander along Essex Street, swing by the old city corners, and eventually arrive at the River Liffey, crossing the beautifully built Millennium Bridge, one of the only fully Irish-designed and constructed bridges in the city. And then comes one of my favourite secrets: I’ll show you the discreet arch where the River Poddle meets the Liffey, the exact place where Dublin was born, the “black pool” that gave the city its name, Dubh Linn. We’ll also pass through the edge of Temple Bar, yes, the lively cultural quarter, but I’ll show you its older side, where merchants, traders, and early settlers turned it into one of the city’s busiest neighbourhoods long before the pubs and live music arrived. If you’re curious about history, architecture, Viking Dublin, urban design, or you simply want to understand the city beyond what you see at street level, this Viking and Medieval Dublin tour is perfect for you. You’ll learn how surprisingly small the medieval city was, why the Vikings chose this spot, and how the Normans fortified it into the walled city that shaped everything we know today. I’ve spent years studying and surveying Dublin’s built heritage, and I love sharing these hidden details, the things even most locals don’t know. My goal is to make this tour feel like a walk with a friend who knows all the old stories and can point out the things you’d never notice on your own. By the end, you won’t just have seen medieval Dublin, you’ll understand the roots that make this city. I promise you’ll see Dublin differently afterwards.

Ben's passion for Dublin shines through. Finding the spot where the River Poddle meets the Liffey and learning the origin of Dubh Linn was incredible.

The Viking history came alive walking these streets. The Chester Beatty and the Record Tower were highlights I would have missed without this tour.

Great way to understand old Dublin beyond Temple Bar. The medieval wall sections and St. Audoen's Gate were fascinating.

The Norman fortifications and the city's original footprint were clearly explained. Fishamble Street and the Wood Quay history were eye-opening.

Really enjoyed Ben's local knowledge. The stories about the Liberties and St. Patrick's Cathedral added depth to the architectural tour.
