Overview

Most people come to Pisa for a few hours, see the Tower, and leave. I've watched it happen for years from this city I've made my home, and every time I think: they have no idea what they just walked past. Hi! I’m Anastasia, Director and tour guide at DiscoveryPisa. I'm half German, half Italian and I studied Foreign Languages and Literature here in Pisa, where my passion for art and history grew. I’ll be your voice throughout this audio guide, sharing the stories, art, and history that make this city so special. This tour follows the route I'd walk with a friend visiting for the first time: starting south of the Arno, crossing into the historic center, and finishing at the Square of Miracles with enough background to make that final arrival actually land. Along the way I'll take you through market squares that have changed function but kept their shape, a medieval street network that survived Florentine redesign, and a university that has defined this city for seven centuries. Pisa was once one of the most powerful maritime republics in the Mediterranean. Understanding how it rose, and what ended it, changes how the whole city looks. Landmarks you'll pass on the route: • Tuttomondo mural: Keith Haring's final large-scale public artwork, painted onto a church wall in 1989 • Piazza dei Cavalieri: the medieval political heart of Pisa, later transformed by the Medici into headquarters for their military order • Torre del Campano: one of the last surviving tower houses in a city that once had thousands • Piazza delle Vettovaglie: a Medici-era market square that still draws the city's enormous student population every night • Piazza dei Miracoli: the UNESCO-listed complex housing the Cathedral, Baptistery, Monumental Cemetery and the Tower The tour is fully self-paced. Pause whenever you want, linger somewhere longer, resume when you're ready. There's no group and no fixed schedule. Early morning is the best time to walk this route in summer: the streets near the Square of Miracles are calm before ten, and the light on the marble is worth it. This tour is built for people who want to leave Pisa feeling like they actually knew where they were. 👉 Important ticket tips: Whether you go inside any of the attractions along this route is entirely up to you. The Leaning Tower books up well in advance and is worth reserving before you arrive. The Cathedral requires a ticket but is generally accessible without advance booking. The Baptistery and Monumental Cemetery also require tickets. Most squares, streets and church facades along the rest of the route are free to visit.

I had no idea Pisa had a huge Keith Haring mural. The Tuttomondo stop completely changed how I saw the city and Anastasia's stories made the time fly. So much more than the tower.

Loved how this took me away from the crowds. Piazza dei Cavalieri and the part about the university being the real heart of Pisa stayed with me. Clear narration and easy to follow.

Really enjoyable audio. The walk from Piazza Garibaldi through the old market squares was lovely. A couple of stops were a bit hard to find but the history made up for it.

I always thought Pisa was just the leaning tower and this proved me wrong. The medieval tower house and the Logge dei Banchi market history were my favourite bits.

Anastasia feels like a friend showing you around her city. I learned about Nicola Pisano and Kinzica and reached Piazza dei Miracoli already knowing the stories. Worth every cent.
